FAQ: DISTANCE LEARNING

I haven’t studied for some time – will I be able to manage ?

The course materials have been designed to help students from the Balkans improve their study skills as well as their knowledge. You are not expected to be an expert in your chosen field of study but you are expected to apply yourself to your reading, note taking and assignments. The most important requirements are motivation and commitment as well as a willingness to learn new skills. Once you become a student at the university, you will be able to find information about the study support available via the virtual learning platform.

Will my UK degree certificate have ‘distance learning’ on it ?

No, the degree certificates issued by the university do not have the mode of study on them. The degree certificate that you receive will be exactly the same as those received by campus-based students at the university in the UK.

Will my qualification be different than if I had attended a course on campus ?

There is no difference between the qualification you receive on a Blended Learning course and the qualification which you would have received if you studied on campus.

How long should it take me to complete this Blended Learning course ?

Postgraduate distance learning courses normally take around 2-4 years to complete, and some undergraduate courses can take up to six years to complete depending on the course you choose to study. For more information about how long a course will take please see the course page.

How many hours a week will I need to study ?

The amount of time dedicated to the program varies from student to student and from course to course, but as a very rough guide we recommend that you will need to set aside between 12 and 15 hours a week study time for a postgraduate qualification.

Do I need to have internet access ?

It is essential for you to have regular internet access throughout your course as this will help you to benefit from the resources available as well as maintain contact with the university through the university’s online learning platform, which will be available to you from anywhere after you have successfully registered.

As a student you will be able to maintain contact with your lecturers and tutors and fellow students online through the learning platform and you will be able to access:

  • departmental websites, resources and information.
  • the e-library
  • future course choice
  • student support
  • welfare services

Your internet connection can be by dial-up or broadband from your home, workplace or Internet cafe, you can even use your mobile. If you are travelling on business or privately, you can connect to the online platform from anywhere as long as you have internet access, simply by knowing your user name and password, which will be provided to you after you registered succeessfully on to the programme you have selected.

What should I do if I find I am struggling to manage work, life and study commitments ?

The first thing is to contact your designated tutor or the administrative team for your programme. They have years of experience in helping busy students to succeed on Distance Learning courses.

Will I be required to visit the University in the UK ?

We understand the fact that for some of our students, travelling to the UK may not be an option. For this reason, most of our Distance Learning courses can be completed from wherever you are in the world without visiting the University. We do recommend that you please check with the academic consultants about the attendance requirement of the course you are interested in prior to registering on to the course.

Even though you may be studying via Distance Learning, you are still a student of the university and you are welcome to visit the campus at any time and make use of the university facilities. You could even graduate on campus.

Where will I graduate ?

Graduation ceremonies for students on full degree programmes (Masters or Bachelors) take place at the university in the UK. Attendance is optional, but many students welcome the chance to visit the university, possibly meet fellow graduates and celebrate their success.

Is there any financial support available to Distance Learning students ?

Scholarships are available for certain post-graduate programmes only. Please contact the academic consultant for more information on bursaries and scholarships.
